Exploring the Heart of National Parks

Yala National Park

Yala is the most visited and second-largest national park in Sri Lanka, renowned for its diverse wildlife and dense leopard population. Visitors can also spot elephants, crocodiles, sloth bears, and a variety of bird species while exploring its vast terrains.

Udawalawe National Park

Udawalawe National Park, established on June 30, 1972, spans 30,821 hectares across Sabaragamuwa and Uva Provinces. Created to protect wildlife displaced by the Udawalawe Reservoir and its catchment, it lies 165 km from Colombo. Known for its water birds and elephants, it is Sri Lanka’s third-most visited park.

  • Highlights:

Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu National Park, Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest, spans 1,317 km² on the northwest coast, 180 km from Colombo. Known for its unique “Willus” (natural lakes) and a thriving leopard population, it hosts about 18 leopards per 100 km², as per surveys. Closed during the civil war (1988–2003), it now allows visitors to explore 25% of the park. Popular from February to October, it remains a prime destination for wildlife enthusiasts.

Minneriya National Park

Minneriya National Park is best known for ‘The Gathering,’ South Asia’s largest congregation of Asian elephants. During the dry season, hundreds of elephants from the surrounding areas converge around the Minneriya Tank, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The park also offers excellent opportunities to observe a variety of bird species and other wildlife.

  • Highlights:

    Famous for the annual elephant Gathering, where large herds gather near the tank. The park also supports bird species, sambar deer, and crocodiles, set against scenic wetlands and grasslands.

Kaudulla National Park

Kaudulla National Park, located 197 km from Colombo, was designated on April 1, 2002, as Sri Lanka’s 15th national park. Once an irrigation tank built by King Mahasen, it was reconstructed in 1959. Recognized as an Important Bird Area, it supports diverse wildlife, including large mammals, fish, and reptiles.

Maduru Oya National Park

Maduru Oya National Park, established on November 9, 1983, under the Mahaweli development project, serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, particularly elephants, and protects the catchments of five reservoirs, including the Maduru Oya Reservoir. Located 288 km northeast of Colombo, it is also home to a community of Vedda people in Henanigala.

Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a stunning highland plateau in Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands. The most famous hike here leads to World’s End, a sheer cliff with an 870-meter drop, offering spectacular views over the surrounding valleys and tea plantations. The trail also takes you past Baker’s Falls, a picturesque waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation.

Gal Oya National Park

Gal Oya National Park is unique for its beautiful scenery and the opportunity to experience Sri Lanka’s only boat safari, where you can witness wildlife from the water. The park surrounds the Senanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka’s largest reservoir, and is home to elephants, leopards, sloth bears, and an array of bird species. The boat safari offers a chance to see swimming elephants and other wildlife along the shores.

Kumana National Park, often referred to as Yala East, is a haven for birdwatchers, known for its large populations of migratory waterfowl and wading birds. The Kumana 11 Villu, a swamp lake fed by the Kumbukkan Oya, attracts a variety of bird species, including pelicans, painted storks, and spoonbills. The park also hosts elephants, leopards, and crocodiles, making it a diverse wildlife destination.
